Do I Dare to Ask?

There are a lot of frustrating things that happen in a day. So many things that cause angst at various intervals. So many chores that are an exercise in aggravation. The coffee maker not coming on when it's supposed to before I wake up, the shirt I wanted to wear still being in the laundry, empty milk cartons not taking themselves to the recycling box but sitting boldly upon my counter, the PVR not recording the show I asked it too, going to the grocery store with flour and rice on your list only to find these things have doubled in price. Doubled! You know those kinds of annoyances.
But there is one that comes around every single spring/summer that pushes the envelope of irritation. And that would be going swimsuit shopping. With teenagers. Oh my goodness. Sooooo disturbing. And I'm not talking about my girls. I'm talking about the things they have to choose from. It seems they basically have 2 choices: Almost nothing there miniscule pieces of cloth or matronly fabric and style. What is up with that? Why is it that the choices for teenage girls that we have in cute fabric is provacatively styled, barely there bikinis (which horrifies me) or a full one piece that looks like it was designed in both style and fabric for their grandma (which horrifies them to say the least) or speedos? And we won't even mention the irritation of them having the audacity to charge an arm and a leg for the tiny squares of fabric connected with string. That's a whole other post.
And by the way, it's no better for me. Every year I going looking for the suit that will make me look like Cindy Crawf*rd, and I end up leaving disappointed, because girls, it's not out there! What is up with that? But I digress. That's too many "What is up with that's" in one post.
Anyway, after making my girl try on 5 or 50 suits, and using up all the synonyms I can think of for frustrating, I have a question to put out here and I want your thoughts.
In your opinion: Is there such a thing as a modest 2 piece or bikini bathing suit? Or is modest and 2 piece an oxymoron? And if there is, where in heaven's name would one purchase such a thing?
Go for it. Tell me "what think you"?
By the way, we did end up, after hours of searching, with a cute tankini, that satisfied both girl and mom, but let me tell you it was WORK! And in case you're wondering, it doesn't look like any of the above.

See, now I would actually like to wear one of those old fashioned suits. Anything to hide the cellulite. If you find a place to get one, let me know. Love your site!

Great minds (or frustrated minds) think alike. I just put up a post regarding swim suit shopping and daughters. The options seem to get worse with each year!!

And to think the swim suits in the photo used to be considered immodest in my mother's day. Can you imagine what people will be wearing when our daughters are moms?

the Hanna Andersson company has awesome modest tankinis for girls. Not sure about women although i THINK they sell women's swimsuits. A bit pricey but excellent quality. LLBean tends to have modest, trendy 2 pieces as well. I just allowed my teen to have a bikini but I also bought her a one piece and a tankini for last year's missions trip. The one piece is actually more immodest than the tankini...go figure!! I find the whole process frustrating!!

I was raised in a very very conservative home, my clothes had to be very modest. I haven't pushed it as much for my girls because I think it was pushed on me so much. Matt was raised opposite... not much modesty in his home, and he pushes it here. We balance each other out I suppose.

We always seem to find a suit that covers enough and looks okay. I am not that picky because they mostly wear it at home and I'm the only one that sees it. But, I think it is interesting that my daughters seem to be modest without me pushing it so much. I like that they are conscious of covering their bodies.

I bought my mother a suit (it was her request) for her birthday this month. It was easier than I thought to find something that she liked. I was surprised at the cost of grown up suits. I usually pick mine up at clearance sales, because with a pool we swim here a lot... but retail was scary! Anything for mom though :)

This is a tough one for sure. I do not like wearing bathing suits. Even when I was skinny way back when I never was comfortable in a suit. Give me jeans and a t-shirt any day (and not the jeans that reveal my tummy and crack!)

i personally do not see a two piece as modest at all unless it totally covers the stomach. I see no reason to expose the stomach for modest plus theres no reason to expose your stomach to the sun!

what about Lands End at Sears? or online and you get airmiles with them... ;-)

I'm with ellen b--give me jeans and a tee shirt! Swimsuit, IMHO, are of the devil!

I LOVE those old-fashioned bathing suit girls - it's funny to think that they were considered racy at the time!
And I've had good luck ordering suits through Lands' End, although shipping to Canada is EXPENSIVE.

Hi,
I saw your blog at 2nd cup of coffee. I have 2 teen girls myself and totally AGREE. Have you tried Eddie Baur for suits? They have bottoms of different revelation degrees and varying tops.
Enjoyed reading.

Oh my gosh I so hear ya on that one. My 11 year old wants a bikini and I said no way but I did manage to find a tankini as well but still some belly shows unfortunately. At least its better than the triangle tops bikinis that are all the rage right now. Good grief!!

I like board shorts. They are basically trunks for girls. My SIL introduced me to them when we had a family outing at one of those water parks. Now, that is mostly what I wear! They come in different lengths and I usually wear it with a tankini top.

We had the same problem here, but fortunately, The Girl is pretty modest and rejected several before I did. We wound up with a one piece, but it sure is a cute one!

I'm not even looking for one. I want to afford a nice one at Land's End so I'll hold off getting one until I can make that happen.

A friend of mine took her daughter to 8 (eight!) different stores to try on bathing suits before camp. This is one area that leaves me so very thankful that I have 4 BOYS! (Except when I think about the girls who buy the not-even-there bikinis. YIKES!)

I have no idea if this would work, but honestly, some of the nicest swimsuits I've ever seen are offered by Land's End. They cater to women of all ages. The quality is wonderful and modesty is the key. You might go online and look at them and request a catalog.

The thing that works best for me personally is to stay away from all large bodies of water where special attire is required. LOL

Hello friend. I have been gone and couldn't help but comment.

My girl is a swimmer (or fish) and I am buying suits all the time. Hers need to be actual suits that you can swim in! We use SwimOutlet.com. Don't know if they ship to Canada - probably. Pricey if you are looking for a suit to hang out in. I have even started getting them from that site - black is so slimming!

I applaud your desire for modesty. Where have we gone wrong!

Susanne, I am right there with you on the swimsuit thing. I don't even go to the stores anymore with my two older girls, it is just too frustrating. I've had good luck with Land's End catalog- they have modest suits. I lucked out last year, with the surfer swim shorts being in style, my oldest wears a one piece with the swim shorts. I'm happy. I hope those don't go out of style...and I mean the long ones, not the short/short ones...
