Mommy Meltdowns

So this weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving. I like that it is earlier than the American counterpart. It comes before the Christmas rush is on and it lets me gorge treat myself to turkey dinner, which I love, without worrying that I'll be having to cook another one in less than a month. And this year it's extra special because it's bringing my girl home for a visit from bible school.
I'm so excited but with that comes the pressure of so much to do. The month of September passed much too quickly. With the "big move" done also came the big storage problem of where to store the few boxes of stuff she left behind. And seeing that September 1st also found a new baby joining the dayhome and taking up every second of my time, those boxes and other paraphenelia sorta just stayed where they landed in the rumpus room downstairs. (Can you tell I'm a child from the '60's/'70's? Does anyone call downstairs TV/family rooms rumpus rooms anymore?)

Then it hit me on Friday last week that we needed to get on the bandwagon of getting my son moved down into the room left behind by the aforementioned daughter. At the risk of making Kay feel like she was being pushed out of her home, we really did need to do some bedroom shifting around. See, Jay has always had the smallest room in the house, which means he has a small twin bed in his room. And that being a loft bed. Seeing the child is on the cusp of adulthood, being that he is coming up on 17, and being that the kid won't stop growing and is now taller than his father, and being that he's either hanging off the bed or scrunched up to avoid hanging off the bed, we figured he should get to move down to the now pretty much empty bedroom and queen size bed left behind by his older sister. And that, my friends, would be the longest sentence I have ever written.

So the big project for the weekend was getting that started and hopefully finishing off before Kay gets here on Friday. So we found ourselves at the paint store trying to find a color that would look good with his new bedding. And after finding what he liked and finding it in the mistints for $7 rather than $30 dollars, thank you Lord!, we were off and running with the painting. After getting Jay started and showing him how to cut in I went off to do other things. Returning a short time later to check on the progress, this is what I found. (And I know you're going to wonder so I'll tell you. Yes we are painting over panelling. Panelling that has these cut out stripes, so that is what the painting stripes on the wall is all about.)

I guess there are ways of alleviating the drudgery and boredom of any chore.
Now the room is done in Jay's choice of color and we're just waiting for it to "set" before moving him completely down. As I stood in the middle of the room and admired the color and the work that he had basically done on his own, I had a mommy meltdown cry moment. I was so happy he finally gets a bigger room for himself and I was so incredibly overcome with the thought that this was another reminder that my girl was now grown up and on her own.

Things like that often serve as a sad reminder of how quickly our kids grow up. I'm with you on the mommy meltdowns, I've had several lately myself. It's fun to see them grow, but I just don't want it to be over.

Oh my word, those photos are FUNNY, Susanne. LOL

I understand your mixed emotions. But you're way ahead of me. When both my girls were away at college, it took me two years to realize I had two perfectly good bedrooms, which were exactly the way they'd left them, just sitting there waiting to be turned into a guest room and a craft room.

It was a little heart wrenching to pack away all their stuff and basically move them out.

In your case, I think it's wonderful your son is finally going to get a big boy room. I'm sure his sister will understand.

Stay strong, my friend. Stay strong. :-)

I can empathize with you - meltdowns are no fun - but I guess the alternative would be that they would never ever move out . . .that might cause a meltdown or too as well :)

I know. It's hard to watch the nest emptying.

Oh Susanne...I have mommy meltdowns a lot. I guess we continue to have them through every stage of our children's growing and becoming adults. We're proud when we see them becoming mature and godly people, able to do more on their own...and strangely sad and even heartbroken at the same time.

You know, I have to agree about Thanksgiving...ours keeps hopping from the 3rd to the last Thursday each year, and this year it's on the last- which is my least favorite because it's Christmas like five minutes later! :)

Hope yours is a wonderful celebration this week!

it's the happy/sad moments that play havoc with our dignity, isn't it?

Oh I just love his paint job. Very, very creative!
I know just how you feel Susanne. I'm beginning to have "grandma meltdown". When I saw my 17 year old granddaughter this weekend, I just couldn't get over how grown up she suddenly is. How I wish I could freeze time - just for a little while anyway.

Oops, I just mentioned in a previous comment that it would be fun to see what you are doing in your son's room, and here it is!

We painted over paneling in our family room -- those indentions are the hardest part.

Love the little faces!! I'm glad he found a way to entertain himself while painting!

I can understand the meltdown. Those moments just hit us sometimes.

They all keep growing up, don't they? Sigh.

I am hosting Thanksgiving for the first time in many years, and I'm so excited.
