The Irony of It All

Just another chapter in Susanne's weird world of baking. Seriously, just to show you I am not exaggerating my baking woes. Remember these muffins, tried out in my new "rose" silicone baking pans? Remember how sickly pale they were?

And remember me making this broad stroke observation and quote?: "-the batter that is inside the pans does not brown well".

Well, I tell you, the irony fairies must read blogs because they decided to make a full scale attack.
So it's still raining around here, and the brown bananas were calling out to me. "Bake me, bake me into muffins". And guess what, pushing the last attempt to the back of my mind, I did. All the while thinking, I'll bake them the minimum time and then pop them out of the silicone onto a flat baking sheet and put them back in for a couple more minutes to brown them. Do I need to tell you what happened? Think irony, think trying to drive a naieve woman whacko, think poor unsuspecting wannbe baker. Two minutes, two whole minutes before the minimum time I'm smelling them. And smelling that certain smell that is yummy baking, but just on the verge of being too brown. So I come running to the kitchen and sure enough. Take a look at them now:

I have no idea what happened. I have no idea why they are pale one time and dark brown the next. Seriously, can you hear them laughing? Those irony fairies just love playing mind games with me. There now you know I'm totally not exaggerating my baking dilemmas.

So silicone pan people? I feel I owe you an apology. Please forgive my lack of judgement in painting with broad brush strokes the browning ability of your cute little silicone pans for all the internet to read. Sigh.

Now I'm gonna go have a coffee and a muffin while I watch Dr. Phil. Maybe he'll have something about irony fairies or a malady about twitching while baking on there.

Well... the others looked like blueberry and maybe the different batters brown different???

They look very pretty!

Big Smile!!! You do write a funny story Susanne. Actually they look like good "dunking" muffins to me.
I can totally sympathize. If I ever won a huge, huge amount of money (and I don't know how this would happen since I never buy a lottery ticket) I'd hire a cook. I'd even clean up after said cook. I just want someone else to plan and cook the meals. That's all I ask!

Ha!

I "inherited" several silicone pans when a friend was clearing out her mother's house.

I like the ease of popping things out and cleanup. I haven't used them enough to think about the pale or the brown.

At least you sniffed them!

So interesting....maybe the irony fairies can chat with the wise baking fairies and get you some answers as to why that happened! Regardless they look good!
Hope they were yummy..they looked good.

I have the same problem and I blame it totally and completely on my whacky oven. I think it's old and needs to be retired :) Seriously, my husband probably says it needs calibrating or something, that it doesn't heat even.

I burn things often and then the next time, I'll take them out and they are underdone. I have found with the silicone pans that they do cook differently. I've also had trouble if I try to take the stuff out of the silicone pans before they cool completely. The stuff seems to stick more.

Ah, the joys of baking!

Your muffins actually look really good! And hey, as long as they taste good, that's all that matters! Enjoy :)

Well they look really good! I don't know much about the silicone and have kind of avoided them b/c I was afraid I might have trouble with them! I'll see what all y'all come up with first, but aren't they such cute pans.

Our high humidity left late last nite...yeah! Today is low 80's and gorgeous blue sky, sun and LOW humidity for first time since Sat a.m. I can bake again!!

I don't understand what you're doing, why they'd come out different, but those muffins look perfect to me. I swear, I really am beginning to wonder if your weather affects your results because it's pretty obvious to me that you can bake. :-)
