Winter is Here - Again - With a Vengence this time!

To say it is cold here is a major understatement. We have spent the weekend in the deep freeze. Last month's lovely snowfall was heaven compared to this. Yesterday was snowfall warnings out for our area all day long. All weekend we have had -22 Celcius (-7.6 Farenheit) with a wind chill taking it to -34 Celcius (-29.2 Farenheit). Let's just say grocery shopping on Saturday and yesterday was not exactly fun. But it didn't stop the people from being out! The store's were packed! Packed I tell you!

So all this deep freeze stuff and some of you talking about this being the weekend you decorated for Christmas has put me in the mood to get out the Christmas decorations such as they are. One thing I am really excited about is my new Nativity. I've always wanted a really nice one now that I have a fireplace mantle to put it on and my wonderful hubby went and got me a gorgeous one. We picked it up at Costco. He wasn't too interested at first but then I showed him the price of nativities in other stores that were not near as nice and cost almost triple the price and he went straight back to Costco and got it for me. I'll post a pic as soon as I get it up.

Well, my sporty daughter was moping this weekend. She waited for weeks to watch the Notre Dame/USC Trojan's game on Saturday only to watch her Fighting Irish take a trouncing. Now she did not attend Notre Dame, we know no one who attends or has attended. Her sole reason for cheering them on is because their mascot and name are the fighting "Irish". For some strange reason she is obsessed with Ireland & Scotland, but mostly Ireland. I have no idea why. I am Hungarian background, her Dad is sort of German/UK heinz 57 type background. Maybe there is some latent Irish or Scottish gene in there somewhere. She dreams of going there one day. She uses 4 leaf clovers as her logos on MSN, she listens to Irish flavored music. She wants to learn to play bagpipes. Strange, strange, strange. Don't most girls dream of going to California? Mine dreams of Ireland. Hopefully, they are a bit warmer there.

Suzanne - where do you live in Canada? It is very mild here in the Maritimes - we haven't had a flake of snow yet.
My boys are in BC and they have had a lot of snow there.

Has your daughter heard the Irish worship leader Robin Mark? Revival in Belfast is a lovely Celtic sounding CD. He will be here at our church for a conference in June.

Well if she ever gets to go to Ireland, I happily volunteer to be her chaperone! My family is from Ireland and I so dearly want to see it...

No snow here, much to the disappointment of two little kids. Someday... (I hope, if nothing else but to shut them up about it.)

The snow just started falling here last night and it's still coming down, nothing like the first snowfall to get me in the christmas mood.

I would LOVE to visit Ireland it's always been one of my dream destinations :)

My husband and son are Notre Dame fans, as well, and likewise have no connection there whatsoever, except that my husband used to practice Catholicism. Go figure. Go Irish! Isn't it funny how our kids sprout these original ideas that you leave you scratching your head? Oh well. They keep life interesting.

I have no Irish connections either, but it 2nd on my list of places to go (only falling behind Australia, and it's a really close 2nd!) But the "Fighting Irish" couldn't pull me away from my "Tarheels" after all, a girl has to be true to her home state (or province in your case!! LOL!)
As far as snow goes, I don't think we'll see any anytime soon. It's still in the 60's here, though we did have a few cold days last week where it didn't get above the mid 40's, of course those days seem like summertime after reading your temps for last week! LOL!

Wow. That's way too cold for me. I guess it's not so bad if you can stay indoors but I don't envy you having to get out and go grocery shopping in temperatures like that.

It's windy, windy here today and snow is predicted for tomorrow. We've had so flurries but nothing measurable yet.

And I think it's sweet your daughter has a thing for Ireland. I'm thinking Ireland gets some pretty harsh winters, too, though.

This is your lucky day, Susanne. I've now successfully left a comment on three blogs. I can't comment on most of them, especially beta blogs, and blogger just told me it's not ready for me yet. Now why doesn't that surprise me? :-)

Brrrr those are temps. that we have never experienced. We are natives of California and have been blessed to come to the mid-west of the U.S.. Last winter was our first and it wasn't too bad.

I need a nativity, I will definitaly check out our Costco.

Boy is it cold where you are. I hope it doesn't last too long.

My daughter likes Irish things too. I don't know why. We watch Notre Dame play sometimes. She is the only one in the family though with an Irish obsession. Maybe it is a teenage thing.

My husband's family is 3/4 Irish and 1/4 Dutch - complete with a very Irish last name (which you already know!) and my kids are the most Dutch-looking children you'll ever see. Genetics are a funny, funny thing.

Scott and I are Irish...and we ahve always dreamed a vacation to Ireland with our kids for about 2 weeks....I do alot of geneology as a hobby so this would be ideal for me.

On another note...I love my nativity set also...its one of the first things I put out.

I wish we ahd snow here....its 61 today.

Being Irish myself, I think your daughter has great taste! If she ever goes to Ireland tell her to make sure and go to the West of Ireland (Cork and Kerry) - that is the most beautiful part - it is where we spend our summers (my husband is from there).....Ireland can be pretty cold and rainy at times though, so the summer months are the best.

Looking forward also Susanne to seeing your nativity set, I got mine a few weeks ago and was so pleased with it (both price and how it looks!).

Man, it sounds soooo cold there right now! It's been 68-72F here since Saturday. I am soooo ready for winter! I'd love love love to see some pictures of the snow there!

I guess you don't want to hear that, in our state, we had highs in the 60's and low 70's all Thanksgiving weekend. LOL.

I'm sure your snowfalls are breathtaking. We get an average of one snowfall a year -- seldom more than an inch at a time. Sometimes, we'll get a couple of more snowfalls or a few light dustings if it's a hard winter. We are known to have arctic cold weather one day and shirt-sleeve weather the next. So, everyone in the state is always coughing and sneezing from the wide temperature changes. But, variety makes life fun!

I can sympathize with your daughter's desire to see both Scotland and Ireland, as I have Scots-Irish ancestry. I spent 45 minutes in an Irish airport on a stopover on my way to Italy one time. I'd love to go back and really spend some time there.

This is my first visit to your blog and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband is of Hungarian descent too!
I tend to pick teams the way your daughter does. I love Duke and haven't got any reason except I like the Coach K.
