Friday's Fave Five #623

Well goodness, where did that week go?  As a matter of fact where on earth did the month of February disappear to?  Here we are at the last FFF of the month.  Won't you join us in taking the time to intentionally pause the whirlwind and look for blessings in our past week?

~ another nice visit with Mom ~  Saturday I was able to drive the 30 minutes out of town to go see Mom again.  It has been so nice just to sit and visit and be with her for an afternoon.  She was still on quarantine so we couldn't go out of her room but we just stayed in an chatted and watched some of an old movie together.  She's really wanting a haircut, hasn't had one for months because of being in the hospital, and she is quite getting sick of her hair.  So much so that she asked me to cut it for her.  Oh boy, wish me luck, I'm taking scissors out with me this weekend.  Yikes!

~ audiobooks ~ to see Mom I have to drive out by myself as only my sis and I can see her so hubby stays home.  And my sister goes on day of the weekend and I go on the other so Mom has "more" company, per say.  I thought to start listening to some audiobooks in the car while driving so I've been enjoying that and it makes the time go faster.  I'm fairly new to audiobooks but have a few on my account with ChristianAudio.  They give away a free audiobook I think monthly.  I find I am able to listen to non-fiction better than I do fiction.  Right now I am listening to "God is Able" by Priscilla Shier and it is excellent.  The narrator is good and is keeping my attention well.

~ Voices of Fire ~ I binge watched this documentary series on Netflix on the weekend and really enjoyed it.  It is produced by Pharrel Williams.  (He sings the song "Happy") and it follows the making of a non-traditional gospel choir that his uncle (Bishop Ezekial Williams ) and him are putting together with the best voices they can find in the area.  It was well done and the people's stories are so compelling. It was also interesting to see what goes into the making of a good choir.  I admit I cried a few times.

~ cold snap broken ~ the polar vortex cold snap is broken and we are back to a bit more normal for this time of year temperatures.  Around these parts, though, that means wind.  Crazy wind that comes with wind warnings.  Some days like today I can't decide whether I prefer the cold or the wind, but for the most part I'm happy because we can get outside again with the kids.

~ when a child really connects with a lesson ~ It's so fun when something I am teaching the kids really connects with them.  This week we did some dental health lessons and crafts and all the kids loved it.  A couple even forgot their backpacks here at pick up time in the excitement to tell their parent everything they learnt as soon as the door opened.   But one child especially just ran with it.  She went home and "taught" her parents about foods that make your teeth happy and foods that made your teeth sad, phoned her Dad to tell him he ate too much pie and his teeth were not going to be happy.  I laughed out loud when her Mom told me that.  Mom also sent me a picture of her flossing her little teeth apparently for the 4th time that night.  LOL.  I said maybe she's going to be a dentist and just go with it.  :D

What have been the things that blessed you, uplifted you and made your world better this week?   What is your focus on?

Your mom is lucky that she can see her daughters in her room. Here nobody is allowed to get inside and it depends or their is a room with a glass which separates or they have to talk through the window ! Our government is crazy, no people start to revolt !
How sweet your dentist lessons with the kids, at least you have something cheerful in your life. And you can work ! A lot of people have lost their work, but daycares remained open.

Oh i laughed right out loud with your description of the little girl and the happy/sad teeth. That's hilarious!! Don't ya just love preschoolers??

I hope all works out for your mom and the hair!! I would never dare!!

I'm not into audiobooks. at all. but I've discovered a set of podcasts that are my new thing. (Hiking tips from a pro and his australian accent is divine!!).

Happy weekend Susanne...i hope it's relaxing for you

Hi Susanne. So glad you are getting to have more contact and visits with your mom. So glad you are warming up a bit there. I don't listen to many audio books, but since I enjoy podcasts to much I should give audio books a try. Hope you have a great weekend!

That's how I first started listening to audiobooks, too--while driving. When we first moved here, my m-i-l's facility was further away than what I was used to, and I really don't like time in the car. Audiobooks made the time go so much faster. It's funny, I am just the opposite with what I listen to. Stories pull me in and keep my attention. But with nonfiction, it's hard for me to follow along and I feel like I need a notepad near to mark down points.

It's so good you're able to see your mom. That's a good idea to visit on a different day than your sister so you mom has less time alone. I'd be afraid to cut anyone else's hair, too. That documentary sounds interesting. Yay for a break in the cold weather. That's so cute about the kids' reaction to the tooth lesson.

Susanne, I'm so pleased you're getting some quality time with your beloved mom. And I think you'll do juuuust fine cutting her hair.

Glad you're enjoying audiobooks. I've liked Christian Audio in the past. It's so nice to reclaim some of that "lost" commuting time. And, FYI, libraries have a pretty good selection of audiobooks (online library, download MP3 to your computer).

I love the stories of your dayhome charges. So good that you're teaching and not only caring for them.

That is nice that you and your sister can visit your mom. I'm sure it's the highlight of her week. Oh boy...Scissors and hair. I do hope all goes well. You could always watch a youtube video on how to.
Too cute about that lesson really clicking with some of your littles. We really enjoy audio books while driving. Hope the last weekend in February is a good one!

Oh, I'm so glad you were able to see your mom again this week. Treasure every visit!
I love the sweet story about that future dentist you are inspiring with your lessons.
Have a good and warm weekend. (Bye, polar vortex!)

So glad you can get to see your Mum again. It's been really hard on the elderly and their families. Great homeschool story lol. Hair cutting? Well I trimmed hubby's hair this week. Fortunately his hair is wavy so it's pretty forgiving if it's not perfect - which it definitely isn't lol. It's the 3rd time I've done it now but I'm not sure I'm improving. I've never really got on with audiobooks. I tried them in bed and just ended up falling asleep. And the majority of driving I do is fairly local and on busy London streets so probably not good to be distracted ;) Have a good weekend Susanne.
