Friday's Fave Five #49

Hello. Welcome. It's time for Friday's Fave Five once more. #49 this week. I think we should have a party at #52. That will mean a whole year of Friday's Fave Five's. And I have to say I've totally loved doing them and reading all of your posts. You guys are all so faithful. I'll have to think on it but maybe a giveaway is in order that everyone who posts that day will be entered in to. Hmmm, that's sounding good.

But before we can party with the 52nd week we have to get to the 49th. If you are new and aren't quite sure what's up, you can go here for details. We'll get started and it won't take you long to catch up.

I nervously laughed when I hit the publish button yesterday, because I was thinking exactly what a few of you said and that was my Thursday post could have been a Fave Five post. Oh, oh. Now what will I post on. LOL.

1. Yesterday's post reciting all the wonderful activities and time we had with my visiting daughter. I won't type it all out again, you can go here to read about some of the fun times we had this last week, which included a great movie, floating down the river and time spent at the lake with family.

2. Cooking for the visiting child. I know it was extra work but it was absolute pleasure to cook up some of her favorites that I know she's not eating. Barbque'd steak, whipped potatoes with creamed garlic spinach, lasagna, bbq'd cheeseburgers, chinese food. Okay I didn't cook the chinese food but we got takeout with her favorite "pineapple chicken". It's really funny, but our city seems to really have a knack for great chinese food. We've had it in lots of other cities while on holidays and it's never quite the same. And that goes the same for the city she's in now too. It's not the same, so we obliged and treated her. But anyway, I can't quite put my finger on why it brought me pleasure to make her her favorites. Maybe it's my way of loving on her, of feeling that I'm still taking care of her in some small way, the pleasure of knowing I've blessed her and made her happy.

3. Reading. I'm particularly enjoying the 2 books I've got on the go right now. And miracle of miracles, not one of them is fiction! Go figure. In fact, when we went to the lake, mentioned in the post yesterday, I almost had a panic attack at the thought that I had forgotten my book. I have never been to the lake without a book. I survived but I can tell you the first thing I did when we got back was to sit and read for a bit. I love when books grab me like that.

4. Frosty glasses of ice water with a squeeze of lemon and lime. So refreshing when you're eating a meal or on a hot day. And not a calorie to be found!

(I have no idea why my pic of the glass is rotating and on it's side when it uploads. Blogger's a little tipsy tonight I guess.)

5. Trying a new recipe. And having it work. I was totally bored all of sudden with cooking the same old, same old. Must have something to do with the movie I saw with the girls, "Julie & Julia". It inspired me to be a touch braver with my cooking. So I pulled a dusty cookbook off my shelf, "Creative Cooking", that I basically used for staring at the great pics and drooling over, but had never actually cooked out of, and chose a really different sounding chicken curry recipe. With barley of all things. And it was good. Really good. Family raving over it good. Now there is no way I am going to be attempting any year long marathon french cooking sessions such as Julie in the film, but it was fun to try something totally new and different. Maybe I can shoot for one new recipe a week. We'll see. But hubby says I should post the recipe, so that'll be coming next week.

What's your favorites from the week? Good old standby's? Something new? Share with us in a post and then sign Mr. Linky so that we can come visit!

Woot!!! I'm FIRST!!!
Is it a year already? I'm not sure how long I have been in on this but I LOVE doing it each week. And some weeks are slower than others, and sometimes you wonder what on earth you're going to write about, but each Friday I have more than enough good stuff to share and celebrate the good things in life!
It's funny, great minds think alike, I was talking about my own home made ice tea as a refreshing calorie free drink! And I'm looking for a new recipe too. Maybe dust off one of those cookbooks too eh? Have a great week!

Sounds like you and your daughter had such a special time together. What a time to cherish.
Love the ice water picture, it does look quite refreshing!
I think you are right about cooking for her, it is a way of loving on her and of course blessing her.

I know what you mean about cooking for the visiting child. I think that *I* gain weight when my daughter comes home. Your daughter's favorites sound delicious--maybe for Week 52 we could all come to your house and eat some barbecued steak? I've never had it.

I never go anywhere without a book either. Good for you in surviving the lake without it! :-)

WOW - FFF #49. That is truly amazing.
And it looks like you had an amazing week too.
That's funny how you wrote that you survived that lake without your book, but I totally can relate.
Great five for favorites.

Hello Susanne. I thought your post yesterday could be your fave 5 :0)
That movie looks like something I'd enjoy. It is fun to get creative in the kitchen and have it work!! One of your faves is very similar to mine about my kids. Have a great weekend...

Wow! Friday's Fave Five's about to celebrate a year already. I have joined only a few weeks and I'm enjoying it very much. It's finding the positive things about my week, even my life in general that endears me to this meme. And I love the participants here. I enjoy reading what are their faves for the week.

Now I can't wait for my son to grow up, attend school away, come back and I would cook for him, just like you do for your daughter :-) Your account made me dreamy :) I love your faves, Susanne. A great weekend to you and your family!

Cooking for someone you love is a great feeling, isn't it? Bet you all had terrific times together.

Wow, has it been a year already?! Congrats on creating a great meme!

I know what you mean about cooking for the child who has been away. I have said of some people that cooking seems to be their "love language," and though I can't claim it as mine, there is delight in making those special dishes that they love that only Mom can make to their satisfaction.

I could have put reading on mine but didn't think about it -- with a long road trip I got through two books! I'd go absolutely buggy if I couldn't read.

Your week sounds similiar...I seem to always be cooking up some of the old family's favorites. Some is alwys here looking for food or fellowship....
I have a new recipe this week to...It will be posted at MGCC.
A group of us bloggers out here want to go see that movie...
I love you lemon/lime. We drink that daily.

Actually, I liked the pic of the drink! I just figured you were getting very creative with your pic's. :-)

So glad you had such a nice time with your daughter.

And I can totally relate about panicking without a book. I would have done the same! Glad you've found some time since being home for a read or two!

As a mom, I love cooking my kid's favorite meals. We take turns each Sunday having our favorites. But the rest of the time, I get bored cooking the same things all the time, too. I love to experimentally cook. My family? Not so much ...

I love lemon in my water to drink with meals, too. (I've posted about my lemons before.) But I haven't tried using lemons AND limes ... You've inspired me!

Oh, my...that is a TERRIBLE feeling when you think you are going to be somewhere and don't have a thing to read. I've started keeping a book in my car at all times for just such occasions. Plus, I have the Kindle on my iPhone now, which is fantastic for emergencies such as that. Sounds like you had a great visit with your daughter. I'll bet you were sad to say goodbye.

Mr. Linky wouldn't upload for me...I'll come back later today I guess to link up - don't worry, I'm sure it is my internet connection.

I love your photo of the water - tilted and all. In fact, I thought you meant for it to be tilted...makes it look very 'artsy'

I'm so glad you had such a good visit with your girl....making their favorite meals is a happy thing, isn't it? I'm sure she was blessed by your thoughtfulness.

Reading should be on my favorites list every week and I cannot imagine going to the lake without a book! I know what you mean about panicking when you realize you've forgotten it!

Go for the one new recipie a week - that's a great goal! You may discover some new favorites!

I drink a lot of water and lemon too, its so refreshing!

Your FFF were just such a good read this week, Susanne! Maye that's because they would rate high at Willow's Cottage, too!

I'm glad you had such a good week.

And hurray for #49 and #52! I appreciate that you host this every week!

I'm no cook but I do get pleasure out of cooking something I know one of my children will love and appreciate (generally it's the number one son--he loves everything I make--God bless that boy).

Courage in cooking? Not there yet. But I'm DYING to see Julie and Julia so maybe that will provide some culinary inspiration for me too...

Great list.

My small group and I just saw Julie and Julia, I think it inspired us all to get the dust off our cookbook. I even did an internet search for "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" I may just order it and give it a go!!
