Blech. Boring. Yucky. And I have no idea what to do about it. So I'm throwing it out to you, my dear bloggy friends. Help a girl out and give me some suggestions. Keep in mind that in my area of the world I will not be planting anything of a real live plant or flower nature until the end of May. Oh and it must be cheap frugal.

Oh, I wish I could help, but I have absolutely no suggestions. I'm in the same boat...I'll be checking back to see what others say.
Well, since I probably can't get a live plant either on my deck until at least May, I can offer you a suggestion of something I have done: add fake holly berries (which are pretty for Valentines Day coming up!) to the pinecones. I did that for a "winter" decoration on a coffee table in my living room and I have received a lot of compliments on it. OR fill the other bowl with large pretty stones? I don't know...it's tough this time of year!!
What about--get ready for this--take a styrofoam shaped heart and plug it with cranberries or some kind of red berries. Stick it on a thick twig, plant it in moss in the pot. It's sort of like a topiary for Valentine's Day. Ta and Da.
I like Linda's idea!
You could also get a large enough styrofoam ball to fit the planter, , then hot glue green moss on it. Kind of like those gazing balls you see, only it is made of moss. Or use the stick idea and make a topiary of some kind.
I have pine branches, wintergreen and winter berries in mine. Gathered them down on Point Prim - pretty and free.
I googled for you - I thought this arrangement was pretty.

I like the valentine idea too.
Hmmm, if that urn were on my porch, you'd find a cat curled up in it for sure! Seriously, though, how about those balls made of twigs? They come in varying sizes and (to my mind) are seasonless. Something like this: http://www.sugarnspiceupyourhome.com/store/WsDefault.asp?One=10
I was going to suggest rocks.
