The Ones That Are Surviving

I have no idea why I thought I'd take you on a garden tour around my place, but I figured I'd do it before anything started dying off. Around here, that could come at any time, in any of a multitude of ways. If a plant wants to dwell in my garden, it better learn the rule of survival of the fittest. I am so not a gardener. I love the look but don't like the work. I don't like weeding or bugs or bees. So if it can make it, with a shot of water each day, and an occasional dose of Miracle Grow, it is welcome in my garden. So here's my small efforts to bring some color to my summer.

For all the complaining I've been doing about the wacky weather and the thunderstorms and the rain, I must say, that with a little miracle grow, it sure has been great on the garden.

I am far from a green thumb. In fact, it really is survival of the fittest around here. If I told you how many times I've dug up stuff out of this front, north facing bed and moved it around or totally got rid of it over the years, well, it would make my friend Katherine's hair curl. She's the queen of preplanning gardens and spending $50 a year towards getting them to look like the plan. Let's just say that I totally don't know what I'm doing and my plan has been hit and miss to say the least.

Here's the front bed from a different angle. I've got 4 hostas spread throughout that I just planted this year so they are small yet. I'm looking forward to what they'll look like next year when they are more mature. But then who knows I may not like it and dig it up. Just kidding, Katherine! Maybe. :v)

This is one of my favorite pots. Don't ask me why it looks so great. I couldn't tell you. LOL. But boy, does it like the water. If it doesn't get water everyday, it positively gets droopy. Poor thing.

This is my other favorite pot on the deck. Tia got me 2 wave petunia's for Mother's Day. A pink one and a purple one and it's totally filled the pot out.
Unfortunately, my pot by the front door hasn't faired as well. It was absolutely gorgeous and then the great monsoon of Canada Day happened and I swear I have not really watered that thing since. With the rain we've had that thing is so saturated that the flowers have been dying off from rot, I think. Next year I'll have to empty it all out and open the drain hole in the bottom of it. It's such a large pot I didn't think I'd have to do that but lesson learned I guess. Who'd have thought a flower plant doesn't like to have it's feet stay wet.
So, how does your garden grow?

How does my garden grow? From the sounds of it just like yours. :-)

I am a wanna be gardner. I can't even get my potted flowers to look as good as yours this year!

I'm beginning to think a rock garden may be an absolutely lovely way to landscape! ;-)

Oh I can so relate to being the same kind of gardener. I's not my gift. I have the gift of pulling out dead plants and replanting fresh color just before a party :0)
You pots and your planters look fabulous Susanne!

I'm amazed you don't consider yourself a gardener, Susanne. Your yard looks great and none of those gorgeous plants and flowers looks at all like they're going to die any time soon.

My poor petunias are just pitiful this year. The only other "gardening" I've managed to do is pulling weeds. For some reason, when everything else is drooping, the weeds look as healthy as can be!

Your plants are looking pretty good considering the abuse they're taken this summer!

So pretty, Susanne!
How does my garden grow??? Sadly, not quite like yours...we have a few things around the yard, but we are just not blessed with green thumbs in our house! ;)

Wow great job:) I love the yellow flowers with the white ones:).... I don't know either names.

I am not much of a gardener myself. Hit or miss with me.

I would be thrilled with this colorful response. I almost posted my one flower bed the other day with a question about growth, or lack thereof. One thing that's a disadvantage to me, I'm not all about the mulch, so that means a lot of weeding. But it's hard to do weeding while you're reading about other people's beautiful flowers.

I think your plants look fantastic, Susanne! I too have nary a green thumb, but I've been able to keep some things alive so far. Perhaps it helps that I've just moved to a new place with some foliage that is doing okay already. Give me a month. I'm sure I'll have killed them all by then.

They all look lovely Susanne. I'm not much of a gardener either, but when something is miraculously doing well I just back off and leave it alone (except to water of course). I think you're doing a great job!

Nice garden tour. I just took pics yesterday and was thinking about doing the same thing on my blog. :) I do enjoy summer flowers.

The hosta's look nice already! And I love the wave petunias.

These are really pretty - sadly, my garden photos would just be a lot of pictures of weeds. Or things my mom planted.

I'm not much of a gardener. My outside plants do better than my inside ones, but I have no green thumbs. My husband is great at it -- worked in landscaping for a few years during and after college -- but he has no time now with the amount of travel he does. I can't get on my knees for very long any more due to some nerve problems. So our flower beds are bare except for a few rose bushes and a hydrangea bush that are thriving beautifully despite me and a few hanging baskets.

I need to teach my sons to plant flowers. Then I can sit in a lawn chair with a big shady hat and a glass of ice tea and supervise. :-)
