Everyday Things 6 The Family Dinner

"...For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." Philippians 4:11

"If you want any one thing too much it's likely to disappoint. The healthy way is to learn to like the everyday things, like soft beds and buttermilk..."-- Augustus McCrae-"Lonesome Dove"

So with Jule's so doing the idea I had for this morning, being a good book, I have realized I've got to be much quicker on the draw on Friday mornings. Just kidding. I'm sure, being readers of blogs, that most of us could understand why there would be more than one person who would put books as a simple everyday thing that make's us content. I could put the adage, "Great minds think alike" right in here, right Jules?

Ok, I think that was enough rambling time to think of something else. Here we go. My everyday thing I'm thankful for this week is the supper table. Yes, the supper table. I'm pretty blessed in my family as most nights we have everybody home to eat supper together. This is a time we inquire as to how each other's day went, share what happened with ourselves, sometimes have spirited discussions about extending boundaries (those with teens know what that means) and just generally enjoy each other's company before the evening's agenda takes over. It's a time to relax and be ourselves. When I hear of families who are so busy they rarely have this, I am so thankful that so far, our supper table is intact.

Oh, that's excellent - and I love the painting! You know, too often our family table is busy (sorting laundry, art projects, what have you) and we end up eating dinner camped out on the couch or piano bench. Does that still count, you think?

Oh that is a good one. I too like that time. I enjoy hearing about everyone's day and what happened. I think the kids cherish that time also.

Have a great Friday.

Great one...I never thought I'd be guilty of letting the family table dinnertime slip, but I have been. And I've been working on it a lot in the last few months.
I do agree it's important!

My girls were so involved in sports and school activities, it was hard to gather everyone together in one place for dinner. So we put a schedule in place that allowed for certain nights we all agreed we be home at the dinner table together. It's one of the best things you can do to for your family. And you'll miss those family dinners when they're grown and gathering their own families around their dinner tables.

I'm seconding what Barb had to say; it'll be gone before you know it, so couch, picnic table, whatever - just do it when you can. You'll miss it someday. The grocery bill will go down, but you'll still miss it.

Good for you for keeping it such a priority even though your kids are older. I enjoy it now, and it's very easy to do at this age. I know it will take commitment to priorities as they get older.

Good one. :-)

Who is Lisie? What an interesting perspective for a painting! I love the way the hands are passing things to each other.

I'm all over this one. My husband often works late and the kids have activities, but we wait for each other when at all possible to make this work. It's such a great way to recap the day.
