Everyday Things 1

This may sound really weird but an everyday thing I love is salt. For it's price it's does so much to add to my everyday. It flavors my food, pickles my pickles, cures my bacon and ham, keeps my boiling eggs from running out if they crack, cleans my coffee pot and mug from stains, melts the ice on my steps, kills the germs in my sore throat. Mixed with baking soda it cleans my teeth. Poured on my kitchen fire it will extinguish it. Mixed with a bit of lemon juice it will remove onion, garlic and fish odor from my hands. It gets rid of slugs (no, not the one laying on the couch all summer long, but the backyard variety).

And believe it or not, when I have a major headache if I have some chips with herb & spice dip it actually helps to lessen the pain. (I know it's weird but it works for me. Hey, I just did two posts in one. Is there a prize?)

And those are the only the uses that I know of. Without salt in my everyday, I think it might be quite bland.

And it's been around as long as dirt!

Yeah, that is definitely one of those things we use every day in some form or fashion, but never really give much thought to. Good one!

On Food Network I believe Alton Brown said the one ingredient chefs declare is a MUST in great cooking is SALT!!!

There really isn't a day that goes by that I don't use it.

And isn't it amazing that we add a little bit of salt to our sweet recipes (cookies, cakes, etc.) in order to bring out the sweetness?

Definitely something I take for granted!

Janice: yes, great comment. "It's amazing what salt can do. It helps bring out the best in other things." And Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, so if I put those together, I should bring out the best in others. Hmmmm.
