Friday's Fave Five #664

Hi everyone!  Welcome to the last Friday's Fave Five of 2021.  How was your Christmas?  Our was super quiet.  We basically didn't leave the house.  Twenty minutes before we were to leave to have Christmas Eve dinner with my Mom at her supportive living home I got a call that we were direct contacts with someone who tested positive for Covid.  It put a screeching halt on having dinner with my Mom.  Though we didn't have to isolate because Hubby and I and in fact my whole family is double vaccinated, the supportive living home rules won't let me in now for 14 days even with a negative test.  To say we were beyond disappointed is an understatement.  This was now the 2nd year in a row I wasn't allowed to see my Mom during the holidays.  But we called twice a day and tried to make the most of it.  Praise God my sister was still able to have her family there to have dinner with Mom.  In spite of the setback there were many blessings throughout the week.  Here are five of them in no particular order.

~ no covid in the house ~ in spite of having direct contact with a friend who came down with covid, neither Hubby or I have had any symptoms whatsoever and when we tested on day 6 since the exposure our test came back negative, Praise God.

~ face time type technology ~ snapchat live video came into play as a huge blessing on Christmas Eve as we were still able to connect with my Mom and she could see her grandkids from my side of the family in that way even if not in person.

~ quieter Christmas ~ this actually turned out to be a blessing.  Because of the exposure we just stayed home, even though not required.  We weren't running around getting exhausted from all the visiting and obligations as in past.  We cooked a nice turkey dinner for 5 of us so there was no time crunch like when we have a house full of guests.  We ate lots including at least 3 rounds of charcuterie, talked, did puzzles, read books and watched movies.  It was too bitter cold to even go outside which was the only thing we really did miss.

~ perfect gift ~ the kids, referring to our adult children, pooled together and gifted Hubby and I with a beautiful custom made end grain cutting board.  We were shocked and surprised and love it!  It's something I've always wanted but would not spend that kind of money on for myself.

~ family puzzle ~ Our son gifted us with a puzzle made from a pic taken at the top of Bear's Hump when most of us were in Waterton this summer (unfortunately our youngest daughter was not able to be there that day and he didn't have a high resolution pic of all of us together).  After the table was cleared from Christmas Day dinner we broke it out on the table and throughout the days at some point or another we all worked on it to completion.  It was fun.  I've never had puzzles out before but I think I will do this more often.  It brought some real togetherness working on it in different groups.  When we finished though we realized it was missing a piece.  Sigh.  Probably stuck in the photo labs cutting machine and someone is now wondering where on earth the extra piece they are looking at goes.  LOL.

Bonus:  ~ safe travels ~  as always we are thankful for safe travels when our family comes home.  We were especially so this week as the weather became awful. Our Saskatchewan kids had to navigate a frozen rain turning to into snow storm for a part of their trip and the other two from Calgary had to travel in bitter cold to get here.  They all had to go home in bitter cold and I'm thankful all arrived safe and sound back in their respective homes with no incidents.

What have been your favorite Christmas blessings this week?

I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and all God's blessings in 2022.  Thanks for another wonderful year of finding our blessings week by week.  You have all kept me motivated on our journey of thankfulness.

  1. Happy New Year! We were with family for Christmas this year but it was in several small gatherings and there was just our family there. It a little stressful because it was the first Christmas since my mum died but we got through it and were even able to enjoy one another's company.

  2. It doesn't make sense that you're vaccinated, tested negative and STILL couldn't go visit your mom?? I swear...i'm starting to think like a far ring winger with this virus...i mean enough already right?? Some of these rules do NOT make sense. We decided going into 2022 that we are going to live our normal lives....we are no longer following the stupid guidelines except when it comes to large crowds or our workplaces/church. And even at church we are only wearing our masks to get to our seats, we are worshipping with them OFF. ok...enough venting about this stupid virus. hahah....

seriously....I am SO GLAD you guys are all safe and healthy and that you had a wonderful Christmas. I love your puzzle and cutting board...those are terrific gifts! My oldest gifted me with a special mountain history book...i've been meaning to email you....more on that later...

Charcuterie boards!! We LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They tend to be our thing on a hot summer evening when we just want something light for dinner.....maybe I"ll do one tonight for dinner since it's New Year's Eve.....i love arranging one with crackers, grapes, berries, cheeses, hummus, veggie sticks.....thanks for the great idea! :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR Susanne......looking forward to more blogging in 2022.

  3. Hi Susanne. So glad you had a nice Christmas, despite the Covid exposure. It is a blessing that you have all tested negative. I love the puzzle made out of a family picture. That is so cool! That cutting board is beautiful. What a lovely and thoughtful gift from your kids! It's great that you could all Facetime with your mom even though you couldn't go to her in person. Happy New Year to you! I hope everything goes just the way you want it to!

  4. Oh, that is so hard about not being able to see your mom. Covid cases are spiking up again here, too. Someone at my son's work and a couple at our church tested positive this week. I'm fervently hoping it doesn't spread to any of us.

I'm glad you got to talk to your mom with a video call at least. It's wonderful your other kids could be with you (I say kids, too, even though they are all adults). I'm glad they were safe traveling.

What a neat idea that photo puzzle is.

    Happy New Year!

  5. Firstly I'm glad you enjoyed your Christmas, despite not being able to see your Mum. The rules around Covid are constantly changing here in the UK. If you've been in contact with someone who tested positive you don't have to isolate if you are double jabbed and now, if you test positive you only have to isolate for 7 days if you have 2 negative test results on days 6 & 7. Previously it was for 10 days. I think the big issue that makes places like care homes cautious is that you can have Covid without any symptoms but still be able to transmit it. However getting tests done should alleviate the concerns. Hard to fathom that we are almost 2 years into this pandemic with no end in sight. Anyway I hope you have a better 2022 and can get to visit your Mum soon. PS That missing piece from the puzzle would have had me sooooo cross lol

  6. Now I'm going to be singing that sweet Gospel song all day. Name them one by one...
I'm sorry you missed seeing your mom on Christmas Day in person (read mine to see what that nasty virus prevented for us--not as big a deal as missing your mom at Christmas).
Don't you love it when your adult kids know exactly what you would want for a present?
Happy Happy New Year to you and your family!

  7. I don't believe in tests and vaccins anymore ! My DIL had one test negative and then she had to do a second one and was positive ! Just a little cold and fiever. A friend 3 times vaccinated did a test before Christmas because she invited her family, the test was negative for the other once too, and then she didn't feel well had a headache did a second test and was positive ! 10 days home and two of her guests had the same ! One man in New Zeeland had himself vaccinated 9 times to get the certificate and sell it for 300 $ and he still isn't sick ! Another friend who refuses the vaccin went without problems to Egypt and came back, there no masks completely normal life and she still has nothing it's now 3 weeks she is home ! What a crazy thing !

  9. I'm so sorry you couldn't be with your mom!, but glad that she wasn't alone. Your Christmas sounds so lovely, with all five of you together. And I LOVE the idea of the puzzle! We're "puzzlers" and I always have one going, especially around the holidays. The cutting board is beautiful.

  10. Small and simple seems to be the trend for many of our Christmases. Glad you still had some family time one way or another.

That cutting board is a beauty! I'm sure you'll get great use out of it. And a family puzzle is terrific, even with the missing piece! Puzzles are a traditional fave around our households so we do a lot of them.
