The Simple Woman's Daybook~December 8/08

For Today:

Outside my window...It's cold, grey, covered in snow and has that chilly frosty hue. It had a little blizzard last night that first gave us a bit of freezing rain and then snow so it's also slippery out there. No kids running around the schoolyard today! In fact there is hardly a car going by.

I am hearing...the news on tv saying that a 71 one year old woman in India has just given birth to her first child. Oy.

I am thinking...of all the things I still have to do for decorating. It was supposed to be done on the weekend but plans went awry when we didn't get home on time because we had to creep home from visiting friends out of town and the blizzard hit. I'm telling ya, driving home with next to no visibility, with snow whipping past the window and the highway getting covered is not something I'm particularly wanting to do again anytime soon. It hit us totally by surprise. When I had checked the weather report yesterday morning it said light flurries for late Sunday. Wrong.

I am thankful for...getting home safe and sound. Thank you Lord!

I am wearing...black jeans, a red sweater, grey and red socks

I am hoping...to finish the decorating today. Finally.

From the dayhome...Continueing with the letter "C", Christmas tree craft, pine tree bough painting

From the kitchen...supper wise I haven't a clue, shortbread cookies, Christmas ufo's

I am reading...recipes. Lots of recipes.

I am creating...lists upon lists

Around the house...are way too many boxes of Christmas decorations yet to be put out.

One of my favorite things...eggnog in my coffee. A Christmasy way to start the day.

A few plans for the rest of the week..finish the decorating today, put away all the boxes, baking, shopping. I want to have everything done before the week of Christmas so that I can relax that last week and really enjoy the celebrations.

A picture thought I am sharing with you...

Making stone soup. And yes we do use a stone. See it in the pot? The person who gets the stone in their bowl gets a prize. This year I got it. My prize? Hugs and kisses from the kids. So much fun. You never know what kind of soup you will get because it's kept secret what each child brings. It's different everytime we make it. And perfect for a cold, blustery day.

OK, what are Christmas ufo's? I'm clueless - can't even guess.

I'm trying to imagine a 71 year old woman giving birth. And I can't do it. There's just something completely wrong with that whole idea. Can you imagine?

I love your stone soup idea. What fun. Knowing me, I'd get the stone but I'd probably swallow it. LOL

Stone soup: What a fantastically fun idea! Do you also then read or tell the story that accompanies it?

Our first graders acted out the story of Stone Soup for their Thanksgiving celebration. It was great!

I missed Fave Fives this past week. I was in AZ packing boxes with my daughter on Friday.

The stone soup is such a cute idea! Having a baby at 71, not so much. Yikes. :)

I know how scary it can be driving in a blizzard so I'm glad you made it home safe.

Many sweet blessings!

Great soup... LOL; although, how does the stone just not be left at the bottom? Ummmmm, I'm game to try.

Great Daybook and blog; looking forward to joining your Friday's..

Have a great rest of the week...

Oh Susanne - I remember driving home in snowstorms - not much fun. I'm glad you made it safe and sound.
Stone soup sounds like such fun. How old are the children? They look so very sweet.
Hope you get all your decorating done. I'm taking it slowly this year. For some reason I just want to slow everything down and enjoy this wonderful season.

I used to make Stone soup after doing a lesson on the book when I taught special ed prek! Yeah, you! (and both of my daughters were in a mini musical called stone soup based on the book when they were in 2nd grade...) it is a wonderful book!
I just reread the part about what you heard on the news! oh my...and I thought age 39 was tough to have a baby! (my 2nd)

Glad you made it home safe. AND NO FALLING DOWN. About the stone--I wonder if anyone has ever chipped a tooth doing this?

That sounds like such a scary drive! I'm glad you made it home safely.

I have to be honest, I am glad I don't live where it's cold and icy/snowy a lot. I'd probably never leave the house!!

I love that you do instructive and creative things with the kids in your charge.

The stone soup is a great idea. Where do you get the stone?

A baby at 71. It makes me go weak in the knees.

Love this entry Susanne, the stone soup reminds me of the same one we make in Portugal :)

Of course we remove the stone BEFORE serving, knowing my luck I would swallow it LOL

LOL, I was wondering the same thing as Barb. What are Christmas ufo's?

Your dayhome sounds like such a fun place to be, can I come over to play too?

Ugh...driving in snow is not much fun. And a baby at 71 - CRAZY!

How's the decorating going?

I love the soup idea and think it is awesome that you let the children help you. They are adorable in their little aprons. How cute.

Nice job, Susanne.
