Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Daughter's Hockey Tickets

Growing up I remember hockey. Even though, I had no brothers and my Dad donned skates only once in his whole life, hockey is a big part of my memories. I remember watching my Dad watch the NHL games on Hockey Night in Canada. Back then you had only about 8 teams I believe, so you knew each and every player. And you cheered them on with gusto. We used to tease my Dad who would yell instructions at individual players and then be disgusted when they didn't follow through. This was growing up Canadian.

When I was in elementary school my Dad, who was a barber, would get tickets to the local junior team games for cutting their hair, and he'd take me along. That was fun stuff. Sitting on hard benches in the cold arena, being there live was a whole other feeling than watching from the couch. It was thrilling. I grew up watching the likes of Lanny MacDonald, live, in real person, when he just had black eyes instead of the now trademark handlebar mustache.

So it almost goes without saying, one of my dreams of things I want to do in my life is to go to an NHL game. When I married beloved hubby, I pretty much knew if I was going to go, it wasn't going to be with him. This was the guy who had gone to a Toronto-Montreal match up before I met him and fell asleep. Fell asleelp! It still boggles my mind. Then when Big City Team was in the NHL playoffs a few years back I almost couldn't stand it that I couldn't go to a game. So the kids and I, settled for watching the games on t.v. Which drove hubby near to distraction, as we commandeered the main t.v. at least 3 nights a week for hockey for probably a couple months as the team moved on up through the playoffs. It was the only t.v. with an antennae on it, after all. (That was when we had "peasant vision".)

So with all that in mind, I just signed off on a permission slip for Basketball girl. Apparently the girl's basketball team, both junior and senior get to go to the Big City in February. And it's not to play basketball. It's to go shopping in a mall, go to a resteraunt and go to an NHL GAME! But not just any old NHL game. It's a game that has my two favorite teams against each other. All for the insane price of $5.00.

Huh? How could this happen? I'm already living vicariously through her in her basketball endeavours, but that's a whole other post. And now I get to live vicariously through her as she goes and watches my two favorite teams battle it out. In real life. In a real live huge hockey rink. With pumped up crazy fans. And I'll be at home, watching on the couch, making hubby crazy, yelling instructions at the t.v. (for old time's sake, ahem). And looking for my daughter in the crowd to see if she's behaving herself having a good time.

Hmmm, wonder if I insist, force them to, suggest strongly gently, that they take me as a chaperone, even though a chaperone call has not gone out, would that cramp her style?

Chaparone by all means! Those kids need to learn from an expert about how to yell instructions!
That's too funny, though. I think you should see if you could chaparone - I'm sure your daughter would be happy to have you along!

I believe this would be a perfect time for you to express your love to your child by volunteering to be a chaperone. :) I mean, she won't actually have to acknowledge your presence on the trip or anything, you'll just be there doing a good deed.

Definitely chaperone and ignore her if you must. I love hockey, too. Being there is SO much better!! I sure hope you get to fulfill this dream, Susanne : )

The chaperone thing sounds like a great idea to me. Your daughter can just pretend she doesn't know you :) My husband is a big hockey fan too. I get interested about the time of the Stanley Cup playoffs - but hey - I do watch!!
Have a great weekend.

Cramp away, Baby. She'll get over it. Some day. Maybe not soon, but some day.

Go ahead and volunteer to chap! I'm sure your daughter knows how much you love hockey and she can just pretend you're not there.

Oh Susanne, you definitely need to ask about chaperoning! It can't hurt! I really want you to be able go. I will be disappointed if you don't ask.

I'm pretty sure a group like that would need parent sponsors/chaperones. Don't you? *wink*

Come on! It's a rowdy hockey game - more chaparones are in order. I think you should definitely go along. You can sit on the other side of the group from your lovely girl.

Hockey is definitely one sport I don't watch here in South Texas much. Skip and I did go to a game once because we actually have a team called the The Rayz (something to do with Stingrays I think)because we are on the beach. I hope you get a chance to go with your daughter. It sounds like you would have a blast.

You know I'm not much of a hockey fan but there is something so fun about watching a game live...yes a chaperone is required indeed...you know for the sake of the children and all.

Go Susanne Go!

It's sneaky, but it could work.

That would be painful. Yes, I definitely think you should volunteer as a chaperone. My mom was at most of my HS activities in one capacity or another (teacher, coach or chaperone) and I survived! Hey if it weren't for you, she might not even know what hockey's all about! Go Susanne Go! (I hope you get to!)

I say volunteer to be a chaperone. You want to be an *involved parent* don't you? LOL I hope you get to go!

alright. if you ask me, (and you know you did..) there is nothing more important in this world that NHL hockey games. For isntance I have a friend that still has peasnant vision and dial up, and has been blindsided numerous times by M. Night Shyamalan many times and is devoted to getting revenge!! Anyways.. In my opinion the best thing to do is tie up your daughter and leave her at home. That's step number one. The second part is to pose as her when it's time to leave for the NHL game. Simply put on her cougar jacket and bball shoes and youre set. Actually on second thought, you may consider dying your hair red and bringing along a jug of bleach incase anyone notices a difference. Just remember, what would Lanny Mcdonald do? And after youve had a grande time living as me for one day, mother, call me and tell me just how much of a wicked person i am! woot woot!
<3 Darling daughter, aka, basketball girl.. or whatever..
P.S. Blindsided E says hi! :)

I believe that it would be great for you to go along as a chaperone. Here is why:

#1 You love hockey and I'm sure the crowd could use one more avid fan.

#2 One coach may or may not need someone to hold his CHUNKY SOUP while driving on the way to the game so you would be of great help.

#3 What are the chances that 2 of your favorite teams are playing? I think it's a sign... and no not the movie by M. Knight Shyamalan.

#4 If your chaperone idea doesn't work out, you can take your daughter dearest's advice and pretend to be her. Afterall it took two BRILLIANT people to come up with this plan, so how could it possibly fail... besides we have Lanny on our side.

Sincerely, Blinsided E

p.s. You can also bribe one coach with a can of Campbell's chunky soup... he is easily persuaded.

Basketball girl: great plan you cooked up with blindsided E. but I think your clothes probably won't fit. Just guessing. And by wicked, I'm assuming that means cool as in when bad really means good. And I'm not confused at all. :vD

Miss blindsided E.: Which coach can I so easily bribe? Share your inside knowledge, girl. And now about M. Night. Don't be sad, you wouldn't like his stuff as much if he didn't blindside ya. Admit it.

And both of ya's: Is you're homework done?

Oh, yes, I think that they need your sacrificial help. . . . Or better yet, plan a mother-daughter day and get tickets to another game sometime soon. You deserve it (of course I'm sure it will be more than $5).
